BACKGROUND ABOUT THE PROJECT TO UPDATE THE FLOOD PLAIN ZONE
Jennings Creek is a spring-fed steam that originates near the Whispering Hills Subdivision along Russellville Road. Jennings Creek ultimately ends at the Barren River. The Whispering Hills Subdivision was developed in the 1960’s. The area was tragically hit by a tornado on December 11, 2021.
Several structures that were damaged from the tornado were not allowed to be rebuilt since they were in a FEMA designated zone. The last flood zone studies were performed in 2007. The City of Bowling Green is in the process of evaluating flood zones based on updated information. The outcome of this effort will result in new FEMA flood zones based on the latest available information.
To achieve the most accurate flood maps, the City of Bowling Green needs your help. We need photographs and eyewitness information about flooding observed along Jennings Creek. The ideal information would be dated pictures showing flood waters adjacent to a definable landmark. The goal is to develop flood elevations that occurred on specific dates which will allow for checking computer models. We want to hear about your experience with Jennings Creek.
