Tree City USA
The Tree City USA® program, sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities that more than 93 million Americans call home.
Bowling Green has been a Tree City USA since 1994. We are dedicated to maintaining this designation and our city’s green spaces. We believe that what we do is helping to improve the quality of life in our city. Trees provide us with many environmental benefits such as mitigating pollution, reducing storm water runoff, and reducing the urban heat island effect. Also spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and help children pay better attention in school. We all benefit from a greener city and we are happy to help make this possible.
Western Kentucky University has shown their dedication to growing a sustainable Urban Forest and educating students on the value of urban trees by becoming a Tree Campus USA.
BGMU, your municipal utility company has worked hard and become the second utility company in Kentucky to receive the Tree Line USA designation. This shows their commitment to the environment beyond their duty to provide reliable, safe electrical power.
