Leaf pickup to begin soon

The city is divided into 10 work zones, with each zone scheduled for two consecutive days of leaf pickup. Crews will not begin work in a zone before its scheduled date. If a zone is finished ahead of schedule, crews will backtrack to unfinished areas, starting with the oldest location.

BOWLING GREEN, KY. Beginning October 14, crews will respond to individual leaf pickup requests once a week until zone pickups begin Oct. 28 in Zone 1. Citizens can call Citizen Information and Assistance at 270-393-3444 to request a pickup, providing their name and address.

The City will not be sending out reminder postcards but the leaf pickup scheduled by zone will be frequently posted to the City's social media pages on Facebook, X, and Instagram.

The Operations Division will deploy several leaf pickup crews, each equipped with hand tools, trucks, and leaf machines. Crews will collect leaves from the edge of the street that faces the residence. For corner homes, each street may belong to a different pickup zone.

The city is divided into 10 work zones, with each zone scheduled for two consecutive days of leaf pickup. Crews will not begin work in a zone before its scheduled date. If a zone is finished ahead of schedule, crews will backtrack to unfinished areas, starting with the oldest location.

If crews cannot complete a zone in the scheduled time, they will move on to the next zone to stay as close to the published schedule as possible. This ensures that citizens know when to have their leaves raked to the edge of the street, preventing delays in entire zones. Sufficient backtrack time is typically allotted to revisit any missed sections within a few days.

To find your work zone, visit the city’s website at www.bgky.org/leafpickup and enter your street name. Please refrain from contacting the police department for this information.

To view the 2024 Leaf Pickup Schedule, check the Events Calendar on the city’s website at www.bgky.org/events. Again, please do not call the police department.

Leaves should be raked to the edge of the street before the first scheduled pickup day. If crews pick up leaves on the first day, they will not return the next day.

Crews will only pick up leaves from the edge of the street facing the residence. They do not enter private property, such as driveways or backyards.

Leaves may be bagged at any time and scheduled for bulk pickup by contacting Scott Waste Management at 270-783-4016. Homeowners can place up to six bags per pickup and must call ahead to schedule a brush pickup.

Leaves must not be placed on sidewalks, in the street, or along gutter lines, and should not obstruct fire hydrants, mailboxes, guy wires, or parked vehicles. Proper placement is essential to avoid violating city ordinances, which could result in fines or personal liability for accidents.

Leaves will not be collected from commercial properties, private subdivisions, private roadways, alleys, or mobile home parks.

Leaf piles must be free of debris, including tree limbs, rocks, household trash, or any items that could damage equipment or injure crews.

If you miss your scheduled leaf pickup, call Citizen Information and Assistance at 270-393-3444 to be placed on the ‘ALIBI LIST.’ As time permits, crews will return to collect your leaves. Please do not contact the police department.

If leaves are intentionally not picked up, an orange door hanger will be placed on the front door of the residence with an explanation and contact information.

In areas with on-street parking where vehicles interfere with leaf pickup, those streets may be temporarily closed to parking. A notice will be provided via local media and marked with temporary no parking signs. If parked vehicles block access, crews will leave any inaccessible leaves in place, avoiding towing whenever possible.

In the event of measurable snowfall during the leaf pickup schedule, operations will be postponed to allow for snow removal. The same crews handle both leaf pickup and snow removal. Once conditions allow and streets are cleared, crews will resume leaf pickup as per the original schedule, addressing skipped zones as time permits.
