Project helps pedestrians with safer passage across busy road

A federally-funded grant project that will help pedestrians cross a busy intersection is expected to be complete by the end of the month.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The West End Greenway and Intersection Improvements project is underway to help provide pedestrians with a safer way to cross the Veterans Memorial and Gordon Avenue intersection.

This is a federally-funded grant project approved by KYTC since some of this project is on KYTC right-of-way and involves upgrades to KYTC pedestrian signals.

The islands are two, new concrete islands with walk ways built in them which are considered refuge areas to allow pedestrians to have a safer walk way across the Veterans Memorial and Gordon Avenue (KY 185) intersection, which essentially shortens the distance they have to walk in the driving lanes to get across the intersection.

With these islands being pushed out into the street, it will have a 24 foot “slip lane” behind the island to allow motorists making a right turn to travel through. The pedestrian signals are also being upgraded and put in new locations to accommodate these changes as well as the crosswalk striping as some locations of ADA ramps have changed.

Completion is expected by the end of the month.
