Pavement Management

Potholes

Potholes are caused when the pavement or the material beneath it (called the base or subbase) cannot support the weight of the traffic it carries. Two factors are always present in such a failure -- water and traffic.

To report a pothole on a city-maintained street, you may report it online or by phone at (270) 399-3444.

To report a pothole on a state maintained road, please call (270) 746-7898 for the District #3 Kentucky Highway Office. If you do not know whether the street is a state road, you may report it to the City and we will inform KYTC.

During normal times, the Operations Division makes every effort to repair a pothole that has been reported on our pothole hotline within 48 hours of the call. Obviously, that is not always possible during periods of extreme weather, leaf pickup season or emergencies.

Pavement Management Application

The City of Bowling Green utilizes Pavement Management Application (PMA) software to assist decision makers in managing maintenance and repair of our street network. This comprehensive software can store, retrieve, and process pavement condition and inventory data, allowing analysis of current conditions, future performance, and expected maintenance. The PMA is an invaluable tool in the development of the citys multiyear maintenance and rehabilitation program.

The accumulated investment of public funds expended to construct and maintain a pavement network is substantial making the network a valuable asset to taxpayers it serves. Therefore, its important to manage the street network at the highest quality possible within allocated funds. Experience shows that preventive maintenance and rehabilitation of streets on an ongoing basis costs taxpayers far less over the long term than allowing streets to degrade to the point where its necessary to replace them completely. The PMA system allows us to implement the less expensive, more cost-effective approach of street and pavement management. It uses a continuously updated physical survey of the street network to allow up-to-date analysis, reaping the maximum benefit from available funds.
