How Your Government Works
The City of Bowling Green is governed by an elected Board of Commissioners, made up the Mayor and four commissioners.
Bowling Green is a City Manager form of government, making the City Manager the chief administrative officer. The Board of Commissioners appoint the City Manager to carry out their decisions and to manage the day-to-day functions and operations of the City.
The Mayor serves a four-year term and City Commissioners serve two-year terms. The Mayor provides political leadership and represents the City at official functions. The Mayor also presides over Commission meetings.
Commission meetings are held twice a month, normally on the first and third Tuesday. Proposals for action are primaryily brought to the Commission by the City Manager or members of the Board. At the meetings, the commissioners discuss and either approve, modify or reject items. The City Manager and staff then carry out the decisions.
Informational work sessions are normally held at 4:00 p.m. on the day of regularly schedules Commission meetings, which start at 7:00 p.m.
All meetings are aired live and can be viewed on the City's Government Access Channel 4. Commission meetings are also open to the public with the exception of closed sessions allowed under KRS statute.
